Loss Estimates: International and Russian Sources
Official Moscow does not disclose current data on its own losses. The last time Russia publicly reported the number of dead was in September 2022, stating 5,937 individuals. Meanwhile, Russian media “Meduza” and “Mediazona” estimated the losses of the Russian army as of the end of 2025 at 352,000 individuals, of which 261,000 are confirmed dead, and another 90,000 are those recognized as dead or missing by court decision or for other reasons, when death was registered with a delay of more than 180 days.
“Estimates of total Russian losses (wounded and killed) from international organizations and intelligence agencies are significantly higher. In December 2025, a senior NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, informed the BBC Russian Service that, according to the alliance, the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could approach 1.15 million individuals.”
According to British intelligence estimates, as of May 2026, nearly 500,000 Russian military personnel have died since the beginning of the large-scale war against Ukraine.
Ukraine also did not disclose its own losses for a long time. The last time this information was reported was by President Volodymyr Zelensky in early February 2026: according to him, since February 2022, 55,000 Ukrainian servicemen have died in the war. The president noted that there is also a significant number of missing persons.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated in early 2026 that in 2025, the number of losses among the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was reduced by 13%. However, he did not provide specific data on the losses of the Ukrainian army.
