Trains now feature separate sections equipped to combat drones, indicating an adaptation of railway infrastructure to the modern conditions of war.

Changes in train design on the Volnovakha-Melitopol route

In Melitopol, at the local depot under the control of the Russian Ministry of Transport, a specially prepared train has been assembled, equipped with an enhanced protection system. As noted by the head of the Occupation Studies Center, Petro Andriushchenko, this train will be used on the Volnovakha-Melitopol route. It includes a separate section with equipment designed to counter attacks from unmanned aerial vehicles.

Strengthening the protection of locomotives and vulnerable parts

Additionally, the cabins of the drivers and fuel tanks have been reinforced, and the running gear of the locomotive has been protected with metal sheets. These measures are aimed at increasing resilience to damage during potential shelling or aerial attacks.

“In Melitopol, a specially prepared train with an enhanced protection system has been assembled at the depot with the participation of the Russian Ministry of Transport,” said the center’s head, Petro Andriushchenko.

However, according to Andriushchenko, while these improvements may complicate the train’s vulnerability, they do not guarantee complete protection. The Russians have not carried out the necessary modernization of the tanks and cars, leaving the trains vulnerable to attacks.
