The European Union is preparing the twentieth sanctions package against the Russian Federation

The European Commission plans to present its proposals for the twentieth sanctions package against the Russian Federation after the New Year. It is expected that the final approval of the sanctions could occur by the next anniversary of the start of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine.

Focus on Supporting Ukraine and Timelines

According to European diplomats in Brussels, discussions on the new sanctions package have not yet officially started, as the European Commission has not yet prepared its proposals. The primary focus of European institutions is currently on finding financial solutions to support Ukraine in 2026-2027.

“The Commission is not rushing with the 20th sanctions package, as the main focus is currently on finding a solution for financing Ukraine in 2026-27,” said one of the sources to the publication.

Presentation and Possibility of Quick Agreement

As a result of the concentration of efforts on financial support for Ukraine, the presentation of the twentieth sanctions package has been decided to be postponed until early 2026. It is expected that by January, the draft of the new sanctions will be ready, and the EU will have the opportunity to approve it by the anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Diplomats remind that previous sanctions packages were able to be agreed upon within a month, so there are every reason to hope for a successful and timely adoption this time as well.
