Prices for Greenhouse Tomatoes Rise in Ukraine Due to Import Shortages

This week, Ukraine has seen a significant increase in prices for greenhouse tomatoes. The main reason for this surge is the shortage of imported vegetables, particularly those from Turkey, as well as the early timing for the sale of local produce. Forecasts suggest that the trend of rising prices will continue at least until the new harvest from Ukrainian greenhouses becomes available.

Price Situation in the Tomato Market

Currently, the price of greenhouse tomatoes in Ukraine has risen to 140–160 UAH per kilogram. This is 16% higher compared to the end of last week and 89% above the prices in March 2025. The significant shortage of imported tomatoes, especially from Turkey, has been a key factor in the rising costs.

Experts note that the market situation will remain tense if import volumes do not recover. Local greenhouse producers have not yet started mass sales of their own products – it is expected that Ukrainian tomatoes will only be available for sale from the second half of April.

“Prices may continue to rise if imports do not stabilize. It is also too early to rely on Ukrainian products, as the sale of tomatoes from local greenhouses will not begin until at least mid-April.”

Opposite Dynamics in the Onion Market

In contrast to the tomato segment, the market for bulb onions is showing a decrease in prices. Although farmers expected a spring increase, the price of onions has fallen to 3–8 UAH per kilogram. This is 19% lower than the previous week. The reason for this decline is the warm weather, which has prompted farmers to sell off remaining stocks from storage. Due to an oversupply and low demand, producers are forced to lower prices to salvage their harvest.

It was also previously reported that carrot prices in Ukraine have decreased due to a significant increase in supply from local farms.
