EU Plans to Impose $1 Billion Fine on Social Network X for Violations

The European Commission has launched an investigation into the activities of social network X (formerly Twitter) concerning violations of the Digital Services Act. Preliminary reports suggest that potential sanctions may include a fine of $1 billion, as well as requirements for changes in the platform’s operations.

According to reports, the investigation, which has been ongoing since 2023, revealed that X failed to meet regulatory requirements. Among the main complaints are the refusal to provide data to external researchers, insufficient transparency in advertising mechanisms, and a low level of control over user-generated content.

Sanctions as a Warning to Other Companies

Official sanctions, including financial penalties and requirements for changes in the platform’s functionality, are expected to be announced in the summer of 2025. The European Union intends to use the case of X as an example for other tech companies, demonstrating its determination to adhere to new digital laws.

Elon Musk’s Reaction

Elon Musk, the founder of X, expressed his intention to challenge any potential sanctions, calling the actions of the European Union “censorship.” He also noted that if fines are imposed, he plans to engage in a “public legal battle.” According to sources, if X fails to comply with EU requirements, it may face further legal disputes.

“If reports that the European Commission is considering measures against X are accurate, it will be an unprecedented act of political censorship and an attack on free speech,” the company’s representatives stated.

Additionally, the EU continues to investigate the activities of other leading tech companies, and experts expect that fines for corporations Meta and Apple may emerge soon under the Digital Services Act.
