Starting in January 2026, a new large logistics center will be operational in Romania to coordinate and transit military equipment intended to support Ukraine. This hub will become the second strategic node after the Polish city of Rzeszów and will significantly enhance NATO’s capabilities in supplying Kyiv with weapons and equipment.

Expansion of the Alliance’s Transit Capacities
The new center in Romania will operate in close cooperation with the existing hub in Rzeszów. Its opening will allow NATO to double its capacity for military aid to Ukraine, particularly within the framework of the PURL initiative. Under this program, allies are procuring weapons from the United States for transfer to Kyiv. According to reports, the mechanism has already enabled the shipment of approximately 220,000 tons of military cargo. Importantly, the U.S. begins deliveries immediately after announcing a package of aid, without waiting for final payments.
Ukraine’s Needs and Changes in NATO’s Approaches
Prior to the opening of the Romanian hub, the majority of military aid was routed through Rzeszów, which created certain strategic risks due to dependence on a single logistics point. The establishment of the new center will reduce these risks and enhance the resilience of supplies.
NATO also emphasizes that the volume of arms supplies to Ukraine has not decreased, despite former U.S. President Trump’s decision to halt direct funding for military support. Currently, the most pressing needs for Ukraine remain air defense systems, artillery, anti-tank mines, electronic warfare capabilities, and long-range weapons capable of striking Russian military targets far beyond the front lines.
“With the new logistics hub, NATO is doubling its transit capacities for military aid, particularly under the PURL mechanism.”
