NBU Announces Release of New Commemorative Coins Honoring Ukrainian Figures

In May, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) plans to issue two new commemorative coins with a denomination of 5 hryvnias. These coins will be dedicated to prominent representatives of the Ukrainian spiritual, cultural, and literary-artistic generation of the 1920s and 1930s, specifically Mykola Khvylovy and Yulian Shpol, who were part of the Executed Renaissance.

According to the NBU, the mintage of each new coin will be up to 75,000 copies. Although not much is known about the coins at this time, there is already information about their production: the coins will be minted from nickel silver—a special alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc—and their diameter will be 35 mm.

Commemorative Coins as Cultural Treasures

Commemorative coins are not just money; they are important cultural, historical, and numismatic objects. They are minted from both non-precious and precious metals, such as silver and gold. Typically, these coins have a high level of artistic design and limited mintage, making them appealing to collectors and investors.

For example, just before Easter, the NBU also released a commemorative coin with a denomination of 10 hryvnias, made of silver and adorned with enamel and local gilding. A distinctive feature of this coin is its egg-shaped form, which sets it apart from regular round coins. It is dedicated to the art of pysanky—traditional Ukrainian egg painting with symbolic patterns.

Design of the New Coins

The obverse (front side) of the mentioned Easter coin features a stylized tree of life in the form of an oak, adorned with 12 pysanky depicting ancient symbols of our ancestors. The reverse (back side) depicts a traditional pysanka from the Odesa region, known as “Sorokoput” or “Cossack Levada,” decorated with intricate patterns.
