McDonald’s Growth in Ukraine Despite the War

Following the onset of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation, McDonald’s was forced to temporarily close all its restaurants in Ukraine. Some locations, particularly in Kherson and Melitopol, were destroyed or seized during the occupation. However, by the fall of 2022, the company resumed operations in Kyiv and gradually began opening new restaurants across the country. At the same time, McDonald’s completely exited the Russian market.

Investments and Economic Impact

The opening of new McDonald’s restaurants is an important signal of the recovery of Ukraine’s economy and an increase in trust from Western investors. Recently, the chain opened its first locations in Transcarpathia – in the cities of Uzhhorod and Mukachevo. The President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, Andy Hunder, noted that these openings demonstrate “the confidence of American businesses in Ukraine’s future”.

“The opening of new restaurants reflects the confidence of American businesses in Ukraine’s future,” emphasized Andy Hunder.

In 2024, McDonald’s contributed over 60 million dollars in taxes to the state budget of Ukraine, which also positively impacts the country’s economic development.
