Severe frosts in the USA have caused widespread disruptions in the operation of Bitcoin mining farms, significantly impacting the global hashrate of this cryptocurrency.

Significant Drop in Bitcoin Hashrate and Shutdown of Installations
Due to abnormally low temperatures, over 35% of the total Bitcoin hashrate is currently offline. The mining pool Foundry USA has experienced a particularly noticeable reduction in capacity: its hashrate decreased by nearly 200 EH/s, or 60%, since Friday, January 23. At the same time, the time to create new blocks in the network temporarily increased to 12 minutes, which is atypical for the normal operation of the Bitcoin blockchain.
According to StandardHash CEO Leano Liu, approximately 1.3 million mining units were shut down due to extreme weather conditions. He explained that
“due to extreme winter storms in the USA, several mining farms across the country faced power outages. The total Bitcoin hashrate dropped by about 30% in a short period, corresponding to a decline of around 260 EH/s.”

Possible Consequences for the Mining Industry
Co-founder of Stranded Energy Investments Adam Ortolf also confirmed that over a third of the hashrate is currently inactive due to weather anomalies. In his opinion, such disruptions could lead to a reduction in the scale of T4-type data centers that specialize in Bitcoin mining.
It is worth noting that as early as the beginning of December 2025, Bitcoin miners faced record losses due to the challenging market situation.
