Louisiana Police Warn of Fines for Drivers Without All-Wheel Drive During Snowfall

The southern states of the USA traditionally do not face issues with snow and ice; however, a recent winter storm brought unusually low temperatures and snowfall to the region, posing a real challenge for local residents and municipal services. The situation became particularly difficult in the town of Sterlington, Louisiana, where the police decided to take strict measures to combat traffic jams on the roads.

Decisive Actions by the Police in Sterlington

Due to the unexpected snowfall, local roads became blocked by vehicles without all-wheel drive. The Sterlington Police Department, consisting of seven officers, published an official warning for drivers on social media. In the statement, law enforcement emphasized that drivers of cars without a 4×4 system should not venture onto the roads during inclement weather, as this leads to traffic jams and complicates the work of emergency services and municipal workers.

“If we find that you are stuck in a vehicle without all-wheel drive (not 4×4) and blocking traffic, we will issue fines. The situation has already crossed into the realm of absurdity,” the statement read.

Controversial Community Reaction

The police statement sparked lively discussion among residents. In the comments, users pointed out that having a front or rear-wheel drive vehicle is not a violation of the law, and criticized the authorities for inadequate preparation for winter conditions. Some people emphasized that they were forced to use transportation not by choice, but out of necessity to get to work.

Despite public outrage, the police department stood firm on its position and even responded sharply to critics. Law enforcement called the complaints “comical ignorance” and suggested that dissatisfied individuals discuss the matter personally with the police chief:

“If you want to express your feelings, our messenger and comment section are a waste of your time. Come to our office and talk to Chief Brown; he loves a good conversation.”

It is worth noting that the cause of the uproar was the snowfall, which left a layer of snow on the roads of only about 66 mm (2.58 inches) — an amount that does not pose difficulties in northern regions of the USA.
