Large Forest Fire in Zhytomyr Region Contained at 500 Hectares

A large fire that engulfed the ecosystem of the Polissya Nature Reserve in the Zhytomyr region has been contained. According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, the area of the fire reached 500 hectares.

“The large fire that occurred in the Zhytomyr region in the territory of the Polissya Nature Reserve has been contained at an area of 500 hectares,” the report states.

No Threat to Settlements

According to rescuers, at this moment, the settlements in the Zhytomyr region are not under threat. Efforts to completely extinguish the fire are ongoing around the clock in shifts, with a significant number of personnel involved.

In addition to the State Emergency Service and forest protection staff, volunteers have joined the firefighting efforts. They set up a mobile assistance point and organized meals for the participants of the operation. Thanks to their joint efforts, the spread of the fire to residential areas has been avoided.

Fire Situation in Other Regions

As of 5:00 PM on Friday, efforts are ongoing to extinguish another large fire in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, where the level of gamma radiation, according to official data, remains within normal limits.

Earlier, rescuers also reported the complete extinguishment of a large fire near the village of Bilsk in the Rivne region. On the afternoon of May 8, the State Emergency Service informed about fighting nine fire outbreaks in the territories of the Rivne, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, and Chernihiv regions. Of these, six fires have already been contained, and the total area of the fires exceeded 2,000 hectares.
