Kyiv Region to Limit Street Lighting Due to Electricity Shortage

На Київщині обмежать вуличне освітлення, можливі перебої зі зв’язком

In the Kyiv region, a severe electricity shortage will persist in the coming days, resulting from the latest attacks by the Russian army on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This was reported by Mykola Kalashnyk, the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.

Critical Infrastructure Switching to Alternative Energy Sources

As Kalashnyk noted, all critical infrastructure facilities in the region – including heating plants, hospitals, and water supply enterprises – have been switched to alternative power sources. Cogeneration units, generators, and solar power plants are being utilized, allowing for the continued provision of electricity to residential consumers despite the overall deficit in the electricity supply system.

He emphasized that distributed energy generation is being systematically increased to mitigate the impact of the energy crisis on the region’s residents.

Lighting Restrictions and Possible Communication Interruptions

In response to the challenging situation, the leadership of Kyiv region has urged communities to implement a series of crisis measures. In particular, street lighting will be restricted, the illumination of common areas in multi-story buildings will be reduced, and in entrances with multiple elevators, only one will be operational. Additionally, the illumination and highlighting of advertisements are prohibited, as this will help save a significant amount of electricity.

“Unfortunately, there is less and less electricity in the overall system, and in the coming days, the acute shortage will persist and be significantly felt,” he noted.

Moreover, Mykola Kalashnyk warned residents of the region about possible interruptions in mobile internet service. Although most mobile operators’ base stations are equipped with batteries and generators, heavy network loads during prolonged power outages may lead to a deterioration in mobile communication quality.

The regional leadership, together with mobile operators, is taking measures to ensure stable communication access for residents and services that support the region’s vital activities.
