Installation of a 2 MW Solar Power Plant Begins at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

Construction work has begun on a solar power plant at the State Specialized Enterprise “Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant,” with a total capacity of 2 MW. The project is being implemented as a result of an international tender organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office in Ukraine.

The contractor for the work is the Dnipro-based company LLC “Solar Stalkonstruktsiya” (SOLARsk), which won the tender. Since March 16, the first team, consisting of eight specialists equipped with everything necessary for their stay and individual dosimetric control, has been working at the Chernobyl site.

Project Readiness and Its Importance for the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

Currently, the main preparatory measures have been completed: the area for the future power plant has been prepared, the necessary equipment and tools have been delivered, and geodetic work is being carried out for the precise placement of the supporting structures.

“The new solar power plant will reduce dependence on external sources of electricity and ensure the uninterrupted operation of critically important systems at the nuclear power plant even during potential network outages,” said the plant’s general director, Serhiy Tarakanov.

Additionally, the implementation of solar generation will help optimize electricity costs for the enterprise. The construction department of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is overseeing the work, while the overall management of the site falls under the electrical shop of the plant.

SOLARsk’s Experience in Renewable Energy

LLC “Solar Stalkonstruktsiya” has significant experience in the field of solar energy and specializes in the production of steel profiles for energy projects. The total capacity of the projects implemented by the company has already exceeded 3,000 MW, demonstrating its ability to implement large-scale and complex solutions in the field of renewable energy.

In addition, the government of Ukraine has allocated over 1.6 billion UAH to strengthen the protective structures of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. These funds are intended to support the safe condition of the confinement of the fourth reactor unit and to address the consequences of attacks by the Russian Federation on the site.
