How to Successfully Pass the Practical Driving Test: Tips and Innovations

Only about 18% of driver candidates successfully pass the practical driving test on their first attempt. For most, obtaining a driver’s license requires several attempts and additional preparation.

What to Know About Retakes

If a candidate fails the first practical test, they are given at least 10 days to prepare for the next attempt. If the second attempt is also unsuccessful, the waiting period increases to 20 days. Starting from the third attempt and beyond, the interval between tests must be at least 30 days.

Recommendations for Successfully Passing the Test

Experts from the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs advise not to rely solely on luck but to prepare thoroughly for the test. It is best to consult with an accredited training institution where preparation was conducted and work on weak points with an instructor.

  • Analyze Your Mistakes. It is important to pay special attention to the tasks that were not completed during the test. Recall the examiner’s or instructor’s comments.
  • Practice in Challenging Conditions. Work on problematic routes during peak hours, in heavy traffic, and in different areas of the city to boost your confidence behind the wheel.
  • Stay Calm. Manage your stress levels, review the traffic rules, and practice complex maneuvers until they become second nature.

“Confidence behind the wheel is a key factor for success. Manage stress, review traffic rules, and practice complex maneuvers until they become second nature.”

Don’t forget to prepare the necessary documents for taking the test:

  • Ukrainian citizen passport or ID card (along with a certificate or extract of residence), or a certificate of internally displaced person;
  • identification number;
  • medical certificate of fitness to drive a vehicle.

The cost of taking the practical driving test at the Ministry of Internal Affairs service center is 420 hryvnias.

New rules for taking driving tests have also been implemented in Ukraine — they pertain to both the technical equipment for monitoring the tests and the conditions for retaking the practical test. One of the key innovations is the complete video recording of the practical test. This aims to ensure transparency in the procedure, enhance the quality control of driver training, and minimize corruption risks.
