FAO Price Index: Meat Prices Soared to Record Highs in September 2025

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released updated data on global food prices for September 2025. The overall FAO price index in September stood at 128.8 points, which is 0.7% lower compared to August. Despite this slight decrease, the index remains 3.4% higher than in September 2024, but 19.6% lower than the peak recorded in March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Meat Price Surge: A New Historical High

In September 2025, a record increase in the meat price index was recorded at 127.8 points. This is 0.7% higher than in August and 6.6% above the same period last year. The main reason for the increase was higher global prices for beef and lamb, while prices for pork and poultry remained stable.

“The FAO price index was 3.4% higher than the level in September 2024 but remained 19.6% lower than the peak in March 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

Trends in Other Key Products: Dairy, Oils, Sugar

The dairy price index in September was 148.3 points. This is 2.6% lower than in August, but nearly 9% higher compared to September 2024. The vegetable oil price index also showed a downward trend at 167.9 points, which is 0.7% lower than the previous month, but 18% higher than last year’s level.

Regarding sugar prices, the index in September was 99.4 points. This is 4.1% lower than in August and 21.3% less than in September last year, marking the lowest level since March 2021.
