Wholesale prices for cabbage in the Ukrainian market have significantly decreased due to the mass arrival of late varieties of this vegetable. Over the past week, the average price of cabbage has fallen by 19% – it is now being sold at 6-12 UAH per kilogram, whereas previously the price was 7-16 UAH per kilogram.

Main Reasons for the Price Drop
The significant decrease in prices is explained by the beginning of the harvest of late varieties in most regions of Ukraine. As a result, supply exceeds demand, which contributes to the decline in the vegetable’s value. According to analysts, this situation in the market is temporary, as the cabbage currently being sold is not suitable for long-term storage.
“The thing is that this year’s weather has negatively affected the market appearance of medium and late varieties. The prolonged drought has led to the splitting of heads.”
Price Comparison with Last Year and Supermarkets
Currently, the average price of cabbage in Ukraine is nearly 50% lower than at the same time last year. In supermarkets, ‘Silpo’ offers white cabbage at 17 UAH/kg, while the Novus and ATB chains sell it for 11.89 UAH/kg.
Thus, consumers have a favorable opportunity to purchase cabbage at lower prices; however, it is expected that after the sale of the product unsuitable for storage, the price of the vegetable may stabilize or increase.
