EU Approves €90 Billion Funding for Ukraine and New Sanctions Against Russia

Key Decisions of the European Union

As noted by the spokesperson for the EU presidency held by Cyprus, updating the EU’s multiannual financial framework has become a necessary step to ensure the possibility of disbursing the loan to Ukraine. This decision demonstrates the European Union’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of ongoing aggression from Russia.

“Today, at the meeting of EU ambassadors, not only was the provision of a €90 billion loan to Ukraine approved, but also the 20th package of sanctions against Russia,” he stated.

Next Steps for Approving Funding

It is known that for the final approval of this initiative, the draft decisions will undergo a written approval procedure in the EU Council, which is expected to conclude on April 23.

It is worth recalling that earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked the approval of the legislative act that proposed amendments to the regulations for providing a loan to Ukraine and implementing sanctions against the Russian Federation. However, the current vote by EU ambassadors has become an important step towards the final approval of financial assistance and new restrictive measures.
