Apple Updates OS Design and Expands AI Capabilities at WWDC 2025

During the annual WWDC 2025 conference, Apple unveiled updates to its operating systems, introduced a new interface design called Liquid Glass, and announced new artificial intelligence features. However, unlike last year, this time the focus was on enhancing user experience (UX) rather than making bold announcements about Apple Intelligence.

Apple Expands Developer Tools and AI Integration

Apple’s Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, emphasized that work on generative models is ongoing, and the company continues to enhance its artificial intelligence ecosystem:

“We are making the generative models that power Apple Intelligence even more powerful and efficient, and we continue to integrate Apple Intelligence into more and more areas of our ecosystem.”

Apple has opened access for developers to its AI infrastructure through the Foundation Models Framework. This allows third-party applications to utilize the same artificial intelligence capabilities that are integrated into the company’s proprietary software. The updated Xcode now supports ChatGPT, code prediction features, and voice programming with Swift Assist.

Key Innovations in Apple Operating Systems

In 2025, the company focused on improving device usability and implementing a range of features for everyday tasks:

  • Messages now include polls, typing indicators, group payments, custom backgrounds, and enhanced spam filtering.
  • Real-time translation has been added during messaging, FaceTime calls, and regular calls.
  • The Hold Assist feature notifies when the caller returns to the line; Call Screening prompts the caller to identify themselves before connecting.
  • iPadOS 26 features a new window system, improved the Files app, and expanded capabilities for professionals working with audio and video tools.
  • visionOS 26 introduced new spatial features and accessory support, including the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller.
  • watchOS 26 presented Workout Buddy — an interactive assistant for motivation during workouts.

The updates will be available for open beta testing starting in July 2025, with a full release expected in the fall.

It is worth noting that Apple is not ignoring the challenges of the AI industry: in a scientific paper titled The Illusion of Thinking, the company highlighted the overestimation of large language models’ capabilities and emphasized that they mostly mimic thinking based on pattern recognition.

Recall that in December 2024, Apple already released new versions of its operating systems — iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and MacOS Sequoia 15.2 — with built-in Apple Intelligence features. In May 2025, the company announced plans to update the Safari browser and is considering replacing Google as the default search engine with AI services.
