Young Potatoes Have Significantly Decreased in Price in Ukraine

In Ukraine, a noticeable decrease in prices for young potatoes has been recorded in major supermarket chains. As of June 16, the average price per kilogram of this vegetable was 47.37 UAH, which is nearly 42 UAH lower than the average figure in May. Experts attribute the price drop primarily to an increase in market supply.

Factors Contributing to the Price Decrease of Young Potatoes

The increase in the volume of young potatoes has been made possible by the start of the harvest from open fields, as well as stable imports. Analysts note that further increases in market supply are expected by the end of June, which may lead to an even greater decrease in the price of young potatoes.

“The increase in supply is the result of: the harvest of the new crop from open fields; stable imports.”

Price Dynamics of Potatoes in Supermarkets

According to information provided by “Minfin,” on June 16, various Ukrainian supermarkets offered young potatoes at prices ranging from 36.3 to 64.99 UAH per kilogram. In particular, at Metro, a kilogram of young potatoes cost 36.3 UAH, at Novus – 64.99 UAH, at Auchan – 43.8 UAH, and at Megamarket – 44.4 UAH.

At the same time, old potatoes have become more expensive – their average price is 35.9 UAH per kilogram, which exceeds the average price of May by more than 1 UAH. The main reasons for this increase are the reduction in stocks and still quite high prices for young potatoes. Specifically, the price of old potatoes at Metro is 30.9 UAH/kg, at Auchan – 38.9 UAH/kg, and at Megamarket – 37.9 UAH/kg.

Experts predict that with the further increase in the supply of young potatoes, their price may decrease even more, while prices for old potatoes will remain under pressure due to limited stocks.
