Why Some Pensioners in Ukraine Will Have to Return Part of Their Pension

In Ukraine, certain pensioners may be required to return part of the pension they received if they did not inform the Pension Fund about changes in their circumstances. This clarification was provided by the Main Department of the Pension Fund of Ukraine in the Volyn region.

What Factors Affect the Size of the Pension

The amount of pension payments depends on a number of factors, which pensioners must inform the Pension Fund of Ukraine about. These circumstances include:

  • the employment of the pensioner or engagement in entrepreneurial activities, as well as termination of employment or cessation of entrepreneurship. This must be reported, as there are supplements and allowances intended only for non-working pensioners;
  • the employment of individuals receiving a pension for length of service in a specialty that allows for the appointment of such a pension. In this case, the payment of the length of service pension is terminated;
  • change of residence (certain allowances may be canceled when moving to another locality);
  • change of status, for example, loss of the status of a war veteran of a certain category;
  • change of circumstances that are the basis for the appointment of a special type of pension. For example, if a pensioner receiving a child allowance for a child under 18 years old becomes employed, that allowance is terminated. Similarly, in the case of cessation of education or transferring the child of a deceased breadwinner to another form of education, the right to the corresponding type of pension is lost.

“If such information is not provided, the pensioner will certainly have to return these funds.”

How to Inform the Pension Fund About Changes

Pensioners can inform the Pension Fund of Ukraine about changes in person by visiting the nearest service center, or they can use electronic services and submit the appropriate application through their personal electronic cabinet on the PFU web portal.

Other Reasons for Overpayments

Overpayment of pensions can also occur for other reasons, including the submission of inaccurate data by the employer regarding the employee’s salary or length of service.

In cases where the amount of pensions was overpaid due to the wrongful actions of the pensioner or incorrect information provided by the employer, the return of funds is carried out voluntarily or based on decisions made by the Pension Fund of Ukraine, and in certain cases, by court decision.
