Leaders in Migrant Share of Population
The highest share of residents born outside the country is recorded in Qatar: over 76.7% of the population of this state consists of international migrants. A similar situation is observed in other Gulf countries — the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. The high share of migrants in these countries is explained by their economies’ significant dependence on foreign labor.
Overall, the Gulf countries — Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait — top the list.
Largest Number of Migrants in the World
Among countries with small populations, Monaco, Liechtenstein, and Andorra also stand out, where the share of migrants is very high. This is related to the role of these states as important financial and tourist centers.
In terms of the total number of international migrants, the United States holds the top position, with 52.4 million people born abroad residing there. This accounts for 15.2% of the U.S. population. Ukraine ranks 50th in the world ranking: the share of international migrants in the country is 13.4%.
