Qatar Prepares to Resume Operations at the World’s Largest Gas Plant

Катар планує відновити роботу найбільшого у світі заводу газу

Qatar has begun active preparations to launch the world’s largest liquefied natural gas plant, located in the city of Ras Laffan. The country’s authorities are engaging engineers and workers to restore production activities following a ceasefire in the armed conflict in the Middle East.

Strategic Importance of the Plant in Ras Laffan

The production complex in Ras Laffan, which has an annual capacity of 77 million tons of liquefied natural gas, was forced to halt operations in early March. This led to a gas shortage in global markets and heightened tensions among major energy importers. After a partial improvement in the security situation, the facility has begun necessary repair work to resume production.

Obstacles to Full Operational Recovery

Despite the gradual improvement in conditions, the large-scale recovery of the plant’s operations depends not only on internal factors. To fully restart production, it is essential to ensure the unobstructed movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Currently, some production capacities may resume operations in the coming days; however, the pace of returning to previous levels remains uncertain.

The situation is further complicated by recent Iranian strikes on Gulf countries, which may cause Qatar to alter the plant’s launch schedule.

“The plant in Ras Laffan has not been operational since early March, resulting in a global gas supply shortage. Its total capacity is 77 million tons of liquefied natural gas per year.”
