In Ukraine, there may be an electricity shortage in the summer of 2025, especially during the evening hours. This is due to a planned maintenance campaign for some nuclear power units. People’s Deputy and member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy and Housing and Communal Services, Serhiy Nahorniak, discussed this situation on the air of “Kyiv24”.

“Some nuclear power units will be undergoing cooling, and a maintenance campaign will take place. There will be less generation. At the same time, during the summer daytime hours, generation will come from solar power plants, but this does not save us during the evening hours. Therefore, there is a high probability that on significant hot days, we will experience a slight shortage during the evening hours,” Nahorniak noted.
According to the deputy, the only way to avoid a shortage is to increase electricity imports. For this, it is necessary for the relevant commission to raise the price caps in the electricity market, which will allow importers to supply electricity from other countries.
“On a private level, I advise taking advantage of the state program for preferential lending to install solar power plants on private homes, as well as energy storage systems. During the day, you generate and store electricity, and during peak evening hours, you will never face disconnection. And you won’t have to pay the state; you will be paying yourself. And you won’t be paying for electricity,” the deputy added.
Nahorniak also noted that the preferential lending program, which has been in effect for 10 years, provides for an interest-free loan of up to 480,000 hryvnias.
“Therefore, each of us needs to prepare and be energy independent,” he concluded.
