New Opportunities for Shoppers
This supermarket has become one of the first in Switzerland where customers can pay for their purchases with Bitcoin directly at the checkout using LNURL technology. This standard is part of the Lightning Network ecosystem and serves as a digital identifier for conducting transactions.
Feedback and Predictions
The functionality of this system was demonstrated by Rahim Tagizadegan from Bitcoin Association Switzerland, who noted:
“The first Bitcoin payment at the SPAR supermarket in Zug, Switzerland. Excellent implementation, DFX Swiss. Just scan the QR code, send the satoshis, instant and simple processing at the cashier.”
Tagizadegan also emphasized that he used the Phoenix Wallet for payments, but any service that supports the Lightning Network would be suitable for this purpose. If demand for such a service is high, it could be rolled out in SPAR supermarkets across the country. The SPAR network has around 13,900 locations in 48 countries, so the implementation of this initiative opens up new opportunities for similar solutions to be adopted in all supermarkets of the brand.
It is worth noting that it was previously reported that the marketplace Mercari has also started accepting Bitcoin.
