Valuable Ukrainian 10 Kopecks: Which Coins to Look For

Які українські 10 копійок коштують великих грошей

Some Ukrainian 10 kopecks can have significant value, as certain varieties of these coins can fetch thousands of hryvnias. For example, the 10 kopecks from 1992 of variety 2.21ВАк are sold for prices ranging from 10,000 to 18,000 hryvnias. This was reported by specialists from the resource “Moneti-Yahidky”.

According to their information, a valuable coin can be recognized among the ordinary ones by several features: a thin middle tooth of the trident and closed fifth and seventh grains of the third ear of wheat.

“2.21ВАк is a rare and expensive variety of the 10 kopecks from 1992. Such a coin can be found in circulation and sold for 10,000 – 18,000 UAH. However, it is very rarely encountered”

, the numismatists noted.

They also emphasized that the rare variety 2.21ВАк is often confused with the common coins 2.1ВАм or 2.1ВАк, which, according to the specialists, “are worthless.”

“If you find a 10 kopecks coin from 1992 with a thin trident, first check whether the grains are closed or open. If they are poorly minted and nothing is visible, then measure the distance between the outer spikes of the ears: for the 2.1 stamp – 12 mm; for the 2.21 stamp – 11.6 mm”

, the specialists advised.

At the same time, it is unlikely that one can get rich from most old Ukrainian coins. Collectors value only coins made of precious metals, such as silver or gold, as well as rare specimens. Ordinary circulating coins, due to their mass production and simplicity, are not valuable.

“For some reason, people think that if they take a coin, set it aside, and sell it in 100 years, it will be worth a million. This is a mistake. Often, 25 kopecks are sent for appraisal. And their mintage was over 50 million pieces. This is, roughly speaking, one coin per person. And if you enter coin appraisal groups – indeed, every first person sends them”

, commented numismatist Vitaliy Tkach.

He also emphasized that 99.9% of coins are ordinary, and in order to find at least some valuable ones, collectors need to review a large number of kopecks.
