Currency Market Dynamics: Record Volumes of Buying and Selling

Analyzing data from 2025, financial analyst Andriy Shevchishin notes that the highest demand for cash currency was observed at the beginning of the year—in January—and also in the fourth quarter. During these periods, the monthly volume of currency purchases by the population averaged $2.25 billion.

At the same time, Ukrainians were also actively selling cash currency: in 2025, the volume of sales reached $17.11 billion, the highest figure in the last four years. Despite this, the record for net accumulation of cash currency set in 2024 remains unmatched.

Advantages of the Dollar in the Currency Market

The net volume of cash currency purchases in 2025 amounted to $6.83 billion, making it the second-largest result in Ukraine’s history. The highest figure was recorded in 2024—$9.84 billion.

“Thus, according to the results of 2025, the population bought $6.83 billion more in cash currency than it sold. This is the second historical result. The highest was only in 2024 when the net purchase of cash currency by the population amounted to $9.84 billion,” comments Shevchishin.

Among foreign currencies, Ukrainians most actively chose the US dollar, which accounted for about 71% of all cash currency transactions. The euro was chosen in about 25% of cases, while other foreign currencies made up only 3.5% of this market.
