European Funding and Prospects for Defense Cooperation
The project will be financed under the EU SAFE initiative, aimed at rearming the member states of the union. Bucharest will receive 16.6 billion euros for these purposes, allowing for an annual investment in defense procurement of about 1% of GDP over the next five years. However, the full establishment of a multi-layered air defense system in Romania may require at least seven years.
Ukrainian Experience in Combating Russian Drones
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the increasing number of incidents involving Russian drones in Northern European countries, particularly in Denmark, Norway, and the Baltic states. According to operational information, Russia is using tankers as platforms for launching and controlling drones, complicating their detection and neutralization.
“According to intelligence, Russia may use tankers to launch these and similar drones – as platforms for the launch and control of UAVs. He added that it is not easy to prevent this, but it is possible,” Zelensky noted.
During the Warsaw Security Forum, the President of Ukraine urged European countries to join in the production of drones on Ukrainian territory, especially interceptor drones, which would enhance the region’s defense potential and contribute to strengthening collective security.
