During the spring planting campaign of 2025, Ukrainian farmers are traditionally focusing on technical crops, particularly sunflower and soybean. According to the latest data, farmers are completing their fourth planting season amid a full-scale war, having sown 5.6 million hectares of spring grains and legumes, which matches last year’s figures.

Areas Under Technical Crops Are Growing
This season, there is an increase in the area planted with spring wheat — currently reaching nearly 220 thousand hectares. This trend is driven by heightened demand from exporters and processing enterprises. Meanwhile, the total area of technical crop plantings amounts to 7.7 million hectares. Among them, sunflower occupies the largest share — 4.9 million hectares, followed by soybean — 2.3 million hectares. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal emphasized that these volumes are sufficient to meet domestic consumption and to form export potential.
“Farmers are completing the fourth spring planting during the full-scale war. 5.6 million hectares of spring grains and legumes have been sown. We have reached last year’s level.”
Forecasts for Rapeseed and Processing Prospects
However, analysts warn that despite improved weather conditions in May, rapeseed yields may be the lowest in the last four years due to a number of factors. This situation could potentially impact the oilseed market and export dynamics.
Minister of Agricultural Policy Vitaliy Koval assured that there are currently no plans to impose restrictions on the export of oilseeds to support the national processing sector. At the same time, he acknowledged that the Ukrainian processing industry is facing a raw material shortage. The capacities of enterprises allow for the processing of up to 22 million tons of sunflower, rapeseed, and soybean per year, which enables an increase in domestic processing volumes provided there is a stable supply of raw materials.
