Uncovering a Member of the International Group
In Kyiv, law enforcement detained a 33-year-old foreign national who was wanted by the FBI for organizing cyberattacks on industrial enterprises in the USA, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway. According to the Cyber Police, the damage caused by the group exceeded 3 billion UAH (equivalent to $71.7 million).
The hacker group used its own malware, including ransomware, to infiltrate the computer systems of international companies. After encrypting the data, the perpetrators demanded a ransom in cryptocurrencies, which was sent to wallets they controlled.
International Operation and Seized Assets
In November 2023, a large-scale international operation began involving Ukrainian, American, and European law enforcement agencies, as well as Europol and Eurojust. During the investigation, over 80 searches were conducted in Ukraine. The investigation seized crypto assets worth over 24 million UAH (nearly $576,000), nine luxury cars, and 24 plots of land totaling almost 12 hectares. All seized assets have been placed under arrest to ensure compensation for the damages incurred.
As a result of the evidence analysis, another suspect was identified—a cybersecurity specialist who was engaged in finding vulnerabilities in the networks of the victim enterprises. His information helped other hackers plan new attacks. The FBI has placed the man on an international wanted list and has charged him with several offenses under the U.S. Code.
