Biomethane Export and Strategic Goals

Exporting biomethane to the European Union has been identified as the main driver for the industry’s development. According to Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture Taras Vysotsky, in 2025, Ukrainian private enterprises exported over 11.2 million cubic meters of biomethane through the national gas transportation system for the first time. By 2030, a realistic goal has been set to increase production to 500 million cubic meters per year.

“Ukraine has significant resources for biomethane production from agricultural waste, livestock residues, straw, and sugar beets, which meet European requirements for ‘green’ fuel. Ukraine plans to end 2026 with a production of about 150 million cubic meters of biomethane, and a realistic target by 2030 is to increase volumes to 500 million cubic meters,” noted Taras Vysotsky.

Development of Water Infrastructure and Cooperation with International Partners

During a meeting with representatives of the European Investment Bank, issues related to the modernization of irrigation and drainage systems, as well as the implementation of the state strategy in this area by 2030, were discussed. Deputy Minister of Economy Iryna Ovcharenko emphasized the need for a comprehensive technical audit and inventory of reclamation systems. This will allow for a systematic management of water resources and the identification of priority investment projects.

Participants in the meeting also explored opportunities for expanding cooperation with international organizations, including the World Bank, as well as the prospects for implementing projects in the Danube basin and southern regions related to the development of water infrastructure.

As a result of the meeting, the parties agreed to continue working on defining key areas of cooperation in the fields of reclamation, water management, sustainable development of agricultural infrastructure, and biomethane production. The strategy adopted by the government aims to position Ukraine as one of the leading producers and exporters of biomethane to the EU, which will contribute to the energy resilience of the state and attract investment in the renewable energy sector.
