Ukraine Nearly Tripled Electricity Exports in May 2026

In May 2026, Ukraine significantly increased its electricity export volumes, raising them by 2.8 times compared to April, reaching 94 thousand megawatt-hours. At the same time, the country remains a net importer, meaning it purchases more electricity than it sells abroad.

This is reported by Finway

“In May 2026, Ukraine demonstrated a significant increase in electricity exports – the figures rose by 2.8 times compared to April, reaching 94 thousand MWh. However, the state still remains a net importer (buying more than it sells)”

Electricity Export Dynamics

Since the beginning of 2026, Ukraine has supplied 157.5 thousand megawatt-hours of electricity to foreign markets. It is important to note that exports resumed only in March, as they were absent in January and February. Compared to the same period in 2025, total export volumes have changed little.

The majority of the exported electricity in May went to Hungary – this direction accounted for 64% of the total export volume. At the same time, supplies to Romania significantly increased, rising more than fivefold to 16.2 thousand megawatt-hours.

Electricity Import Trends

Despite the increase in exports, Ukraine continues to actively import electricity. In May 2026, import volumes decreased by 29% compared to April, totaling 398 thousand megawatt-hours. A reduction in supplies was recorded from almost all partner countries, except for Slovakia. Meanwhile, in annual comparison (with May 2025), electricity imports to Ukraine nearly doubled.

Overall, electricity imports in May significantly exceeded exports – by more than four times. The largest suppliers remain Hungary (52% of the total import volume).

It is worth reminding that the government has decided to extend the current electricity tariff for household consumers at least until October 31, 2026.
