Ukraine’s National Debt Exceeds $171.7 Billion: March Analysis

The total national debt of Ukraine, which includes both direct and guaranteed debt, increased by 1.56% in March 2025, equivalent to $2.64 billion, reaching $171.73 billion. This information was released by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine.

At the end of March, the total debt amounted to 7,123.25 billion hryvnias ($171.73 billion), compared to 7,019.53 billion hryvnias ($169.09 billion) at the beginning of the month. The direct national debt as of the reporting date reached 6,852.22 billion hryvnias ($165.2 billion), while in the previous month this figure was 6,740.16 billion hryvnias ($162.36 billion).

Changes in External and Domestic Debt

During March, the direct external debt increased from $118.05 billion to $120.94 billion. At the same time, the direct domestic debt decreased in hryvnia equivalent from 1,839.62 billion hryvnias to 1,835.65 billion hryvnias, which corresponds to a decrease from $44.31 billion to $44.26 billion in dollar equivalent.

The government-guaranteed debt at the end of March amounted to 271.03 billion hryvnias, or $6.753 billion.

Debt Dynamics in Previous Years

The total national debt of Ukraine increased by 14.27% in 2024, or by $20.74 billion, reaching $166.06 billion. In recent years, the data on the growth of the total national debt is as follows:

  • In 2023, the debt increased by 30.4%, amounting to $33.87 billion, reaching a record $145.32 billion;
  • In 2022, it increased by $13.39 billion (13.66%) to $111.34 billion;
  • In 2021, it grew by 8.52%, or by $7.69 billion, to $97.95 billion;
  • In 2020, the debt increased by 6.9% from $84.4 billion to $90.3 billion.
