Ukraine is officially ready to begin mass production of anti-personnel mines, which will significantly enhance the country’s defense capabilities amid the ongoing war. This decision became possible after the adoption of a law suspending the application of the Ottawa Convention on the prohibition of the use of anti-personnel mines for Ukraine and its signing by the president.

Mine Production: Quick Start Due to Simple Technology
The Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, Roman Kostenko, emphasized that the technological process for manufacturing anti-personnel mines is not complex. As a result, the production of munitions for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine can begin in the shortest possible time. The Ukrainian industry is already prepared to promptly establish the production of the necessary quantity of mines.
Advantages of Mining the State Border
The use of anti-personnel mines is viewed as a key factor in strengthening the country’s defense, especially along the long sections of the border with Belarus and Russia. According to Kostenko, the length of this line exceeds 3,000 kilometers, so minefields must serve as a serious preventive defense.
“Considering the border with Belarus and Russia, it is over 3,000 kilometers. And on this section, a minefield at least several dozen kilometers wide must be created. This is preventive protection,” Kostenko noted.
The expert emphasized that even the most modern fortifications cannot provide full protection without integration with mine-explosive engineering barriers. It is precisely the combination of such means that will allow for the most effective protection of Ukraine against a potential enemy offensive.
