In the coming days, Ukraine plans to start regular supplies of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the European Union via a new route. The gas will be delivered to Ukraine in a reverse direction from Greece through Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova.
This is reported by Finway
The previous heating season ended for Ukraine with a historically low balance of free gas in underground gas storage facilities – only 0.67 billion cubic meters. Domestic gas production will be insufficient to accumulate the necessary reserves, as it has significantly decreased due to Russian shelling. To fill the underground gas storage (UGS) by October, it will be necessary to import between 5 to 8 billion cubic meters of gas from external markets. Gas injection into UGS began in the second decade of April, and currently, imports amount to 20-21 million cubic meters per day.
Advantages of the New Import Route
The new route for importing American LNG through Greece will allow for an additional import of about 3 million cubic meters of gas per day. The first auction for the allocation of capacities at all points of the “Trans-Balkan Corridor” is scheduled for May 29, which will facilitate the start of gas supplies in June. According to preliminary estimates, imports via the new route could reach approximately 400 million cubic meters by October.
“This route will allow Ukraine to secure additional volumes of gas imports during a critical period”.
