The Ukrainian authorities predict that in the first days of October, the European Union will adopt the 19th sanctions package against the Russian Federation. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that this step is extremely necessary, as Russia has rejected all genuine peace initiatives and must feel strong economic and political pressure.

Sanctions Against the Russian Energy Sector
The head of state underscored the particular importance of intensifying sanctions specifically on Russia’s energy sector. According to him, it is critically important to deliver a painful blow to the trade of energy resources and the related infrastructure of Moscow’s tanker fleet.
“Moreover, there is now intelligence information that the Russians are using tankers to launch and control drones that are deployed against European countries,” the president emphasized.
Positions of EU Member States on the New Package
Discussions on the 19th sanctions package are currently ongoing among the ambassadors of the 27 EU countries. Last week, diplomats began consultations regarding the upcoming restrictions, but a final agreement has not yet been reached. In particular, Slovakia expressed reservations about the approval of the package but did not officially block the process. Its position remains unclear and is accompanied by demands in the areas of energy and transport. Diplomats do not rule out that a similar position may align with Hungary’s interests.
Additionally, several other EU states have also raised concerns about the proposed package, so consultations are ongoing. A final agreement is expected in the shortest possible time, as planned for early October.
