Trump Extends Sanctions Against Russia, Ukraine Prepares New Restrictions

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order extending sanctions against Russia, initially imposed in April 2021 by his predecessor Joe Biden due to the aggressive foreign policy of the Russian Federation. These restrictions were significantly expanded in March 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

On April 15, 2021, Trump issued Executive Order 14024, declaring a national emergency of national significance. This order gives U.S. authorities the ability to impose sanctions on individuals and entities that pose a threat to national security, foreign policy, and the economy of the United States due to the harmful activities of the Russian government. In March 2022, the scope of these sanctions was significantly broadened.

“I am extending the national emergency for one year,” the signed order by Trump states.

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the preparation of new Ukrainian sanctions against Russia and individuals who facilitate the war. In particular, this concerns the shadow tanker fleet, propagandists, and others who support Russia’s aggression. Zelensky noted that active work is underway to coordinate Ukrainian sanctions measures with international partners.
