Trump Considers New Sanctions Against Russia: Details and Possible Consequences

U.S. officials have completed the development of a new package of economic sanctions against Russia, which includes banking and energy measures aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow. These restrictions are intended to influence the Russian Federation to support U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

According to Reuters, citing three U.S. officials and a source familiar with the matter, companies such as the Russian energy corporation Gazprom, as well as large enterprises involved in natural resource extraction and operating in the banking sector, may be targeted by the sanctions.

Will Trump Support New Sanctions?

It is currently unclear whether Trump will support the introduction of a new package of sanctions against Russia. According to one source, the U.S. National Security Council “is trying to coordinate a certain set of more punitive measures against Russia that must be approved by Trump.” “It is entirely his decision,” confirmed a second U.S. official.

The approval of new sanctions, which may emerge after the signing of an agreement between the U.S. and Ukraine regarding mineral extraction, is actively being promoted as part of President Trump’s peace efforts. This could strengthen his position regarding the Kremlin.

U.S.-Russia Relations: New Challenges

In March, Reuters reported on the development of a plan for potential easing of sanctions against Russia. However, recently Trump has expressed frustration over the slow pace of Russian dictator Putin in ending the invasion. He recently held a “very productive” meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Vatican.

The next day, Trump stated in a post on the Truth Social platform that he “seriously considers the possibility of imposing large-scale banking sanctions and tariffs against Russia,” which would remain in effect until a ceasefire and a final peace agreement are reached.

“It was previously reported that American lawmakers have already prepared a proposal for new sanctions against Russia, as well as 500% tariffs for countries purchasing Russian oil, gas, and aluminum,” the journalists noted. This bill has received broad bipartisan support in the Senate and may even have a majority that could override a veto.
