Who Is Eligible for Funeral Assistance
As explained by lawyer Daria Lyalyuk from the law firm RIYAKO & PARTNERS, funeral assistance is primarily granted to family members of the deceased who are involved in organizing the funeral. According to the law “On Mandatory State Social Insurance,” in the event of the death of an insured person or their dependents, assistance can be received by parents, grandparents, spouses, children, siblings, and grandchildren under the age of 18 (except for individuals with disabilities who received it before reaching adulthood), as well as individuals up to 23 years old who are studying at higher or pre-higher educational institutions.
However, it is important to remember that funeral assistance is not paid if the deceased person was fully state-supported and their burial was funded by the institution where they resided.
What Is the Amount of Funeral Assistance in 2025
The amount of assistance is determined based on the law under which the deceased person was granted a pension. Payments may be as follows:
- Two pensions that the deceased person received in a month.
- A three-month pension, but not less than five times the minimum subsistence level for working individuals (15,140 hryvnias).
- If the pension was granted under the law “On Mandatory State Pension Insurance,” the amount allocated for burial will be equal to two months’ pension.
Regarding military personnel, if the pensioner received a pension under the law “On Pension Provision for Persons Discharged from Military Service and Some Other Persons,” the assistance will be determined according to the minimum subsistence level for working individuals and also cannot be less than 15,140 hryvnias.
To receive payments after the death of a pensioner, it is necessary to contact one of the Service Centers of the Main Departments of the Pension Fund, providing the following documents:
- Original passport and identification code.
- An application for funeral assistance, which is filled out on-site.
- Death certificate of the individual.
- Extract from the State Register of Civil Status Acts regarding the death or a death certificate of the pensioner.
- Bank account details for the transfer of funds.
It was previously reported that some Ukrainians receive cash humanitarian assistance from the UN in the amount of 10,800 hryvnias per person.
