Prospects for new sanctions in the US Congress
At the same time, the Senate Majority Leader John Thune has expressed readiness to support a bill that proposes new trade and financial sanctions against Russia. In particular, the legislative initiative suggests imposing higher tariffs on energy imports from Russia for other countries, as well as secondary sanctions against foreign companies that cooperate with the Russian energy sector.
“The bill is ready… I think it’s time to move forward,” Thune emphasized.
According to him, the issue of considering the Graham-Blumenthal bill could be brought to discussion in the Senate within the next 30 days. Republicans are expecting official approval of this initiative from US President Donald Trump.
Trump’s position on sanctions against Russia
Despite the willingness of Congress members to implement new restrictions, Donald Trump currently does not consider it appropriate to make such decisions. He plans to consult with Republican leaders in Congress and discuss possible sanctions against Russia in detail. Trump emphasized that he does not rule out any options, but believes that now is not the best moment to make such decisions.
According to the US President, the final decision on the implementation of new American sanctions against Russia will be made after further consultations with representatives of the Republican Party.
