Traditions of celebrating Trinity: green amulets, church services, and family coziness

Trinity is traditionally associated with the abundance of greenery, marking the arrival of true summer. All the main rituals of this day are aimed at ensuring well-being and protecting the home.

  • Decorating the home: On the eve of the holiday, floors, windows, and icons are adorned with fresh branches of birch, linden, or maple, as well as fragrant herbs — calamus, mint, thyme, and lovage. It is believed that such greenery stands guard over the home and protects it from evil forces.
  • Visiting the church: In the morning, believers head to the festive church service. They bring bouquets of herbs and flowers for blessing. After this, the greenery is kept behind the icons throughout the year as a talisman.
  • Family feast: After returning from church, families gather around the festive table. The main dishes often include loaves and pies, symbolizing generosity and hospitality.

“The holiday of Trinity, affectionately called Green Holidays by the people, is one of the most important and anticipated Christian celebrations of the year. This day symbolizes the flourishing of nature, the triumph of life, and deep spiritual renewal, uniting ancient folk traditions and church canons.”

Main prohibitions on Trinity: what not to do

Since Trinity belongs to the twelve major holidays, folk wisdom and church rules caution against certain actions to avoid misfortunes.

  • Prohibition on heavy work: On this day, it is strictly not recommended to perform any work in the garden or yard, engage in construction, cleaning, washing, or sewing. All household chores should be completed the day before, on Father’s Saturday.
  • Avoiding negativity: It is forbidden to quarrel, curse, envy, or speak ill of others. It is important to maintain calm, harmony, and forgive one another.
  • Swimming in water bodies: According to folk beliefs, during Trinity, mermaids and water spirits become active, so swimming in rivers and lakes is considered dangerous — “they may pull you to the bottom”.
  • Prohibition on cutting trees: It is not recommended to cut down trees or break large branches (except for those used for decoration), as nature is considered especially alive and sacred on this day.

Rain omen: If it rains on Trinity, it is considered a good sign that promises a rich harvest, warm summer, and no frosts in autumn.
