The Spanish Government Plans to Reduce the Workweek to 37.5 Hours

Уряд Іспанії просуває план скорочення робочого тижня

The Spanish government is initiating a plan to reduce the workweek from 40 to 37.5 hours. As part of this process, on May 6, the cabinet will review this project before it is submitted to parliament.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, during his recent speech, announced that discussions on the workweek reduction project will take place at a cabinet meeting. It is important to note that projects are usually first approved at the government level, after which they are sent to parliament, where they undergo a lengthy approval process that does not always end successfully.

According to Bloomberg, Sánchez has support from a number of allies, including several leftist parties that advocate for the reduction of the workweek, as well as two groups representing business interests. However, the pro-Catalan separatist group Junts, which was previously an ally of Sánchez in parliament, has repeatedly protested against reducing working hours from the current 40 to 37.5.

“The government intends to reduce the workweek, but not all parties are ready to support this move.”
