The agreement between Ukraine and the USA regarding the development of natural resources, reached after two months of intense negotiations, has raised concerns in the Kremlin. Pressure is being applied to Vladimir Putin to at least demonstrate a willingness to compromise. In the event of failure, Russia faces a new package of American sanctions that could deal a “serious blow” to the economy, as the budget deficit is already beginning to rise. Despite officials’ statements about successfully overcoming sanctions, concerns about the economic situation are growing.
Internal Contradictions in Kremlin Politics
Within the Kremlin, the “peace party” is urging Putin to accept Trump’s terms, which include freezing the conflict at the front in exchange for the recognition of Crimea and the lifting of sanctions. However, the “hawks” continue to insist on military actions.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal emphasized that the agreement on natural resources could facilitate new supplies of American air defense systems to Ukraine.
