Hungarian Government’s Statement on Energy Blockade

Hungarian government spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs reported that the attack, likely carried out using 22 drones, aims to create an energy blockade against Hungary. Budapest noted that strikes on infrastructure could complicate not only gas supplies but also overall stability of the country’s energy system.

“The Ukrainians have truly crossed all boundaries by initiating an attempt at a ‘full energy blockade’ against Hungary by attacking the key compressor station of the ‘Turkish Stream’ gas pipeline with 22 drones,” said the Hungarian Foreign Minister.

Hungary’s Response and the European Context

Peter Szijjarto also emphasized that the compressor station is vital for Hungary and added that the country is already under an oil blockade and now risks losing access to gas as well. In this regard, he called for an immediate cessation of attacks on energy infrastructure that could jeopardize the stability of energy supplies.

At the same time, the minister stressed that Hungary remains one of the key suppliers of gas and electricity to Ukraine. Against this backdrop, discontent is growing within the European Union regarding the policies of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government. Discussions are ongoing in Brussels about possible ways to circumvent Hungary’s position, which is blocking decisions in support of Ukraine, leading to additional tension in relations within the EU.
