Criteria for Choosing a Bank and New Trends

According to a survey by the sociological group “Rating”, Ukrainians base their choice of bank not only on the guarantees provided by the Deposit Guarantee Fund for Individuals but also on other factors. Among them:

  • the perception of the bank as a reliable and stable institution,
  • personal experience of interaction with various banking institutions,
  • the presence of a developed network of ATMs and branches.

“Moreover, there is a new trend of increasing the share of respondents who have a card account opened at their initiative. The study also records an increasing role of online operations – specifically, the rise in the use of mobile and/or internet banking from 41% in 2021 to 59% in 2025,” the report states.

The research also revealed a heightened interest among Ukrainians in obtaining complete information about the conditions for guaranteeing bank deposits: 35% of respondents emphasized the importance of this. Another 30% of respondents want access to information regarding compensation payments to depositors of bankrupt banks.

According to the Deposit Guarantee Fund, 63% of respondents believe that guarantees should also extend to the deposits of legal entities.

Growth of Bank Deposits

Ukrainians are increasingly trusting their savings to banking institutions. As of early May 2025, the total volume of deposits from individuals and entrepreneurs in Ukrainian banks reached 1.43 trillion UAH. Of this amount, 61.7% is placed in state banks, 20.6% in private banks, and another 17.7% in banks of foreign financial groups.

The national currency remains the most popular: depositors placed 918.3 billion UAH in hryvnias, which is 25.5 billion UAH more compared to the previous month. In foreign currency, Ukrainians held the equivalent of 500 billion UAH, which also shows an increase of 10 billion UAH over the last month.
