Sweden plans to significantly increase payments for migrants who have decided to return to their home countries. The amount of the payments will rise from €900 to €32,000, which is part of Stockholm’s efforts to manage migration flows.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson commented on this initiative, noting that the previous payment amount proved ineffective, as only one out of 70 applications for return submitted in 2023 was approved. Thus, the government decided to raise the subsidy amount by 3,400% in hopes of encouraging more migrants to return home.
Inspiration from Denmark
Kristersson mentioned that the new payments will be modeled after the Danish system, as the government wants to ease the lives of those migrants who feel they cannot find their place in Swedish society. As the Prime Minister stated, “we are essentially copying the Danish model and significantly increasing this amount to make life easier for those who realize they prefer to return to their country but, for various reasons, do not feel they are finding a well-established life in Sweden.”
Possible Consequences of the Initiative
Although the new initiative may not be welcomed by everyone, Kristersson believes that migrants who cannot integrate into Swedish society will at least consider returning to their country of origin. This decision is set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
