The Slovak Parliament has adopted a resolution that mandates the government not to approve any new European Union sanctions against the Russian Federation if they could harm the national interests of the country. The decision was accompanied by a statement from Prime Minister Robert Fico, who emphasized Slovakia’s desire to remain a constructive partner in the EU, but not at the cost of its own economic security.

Slovak Government’s Position on Sanctions
Prime Minister Robert Fico noted that the government will act in the country’s interests and block any sanctions that could cause economic or energy harm to Slovakia. According to Fico, such restrictive measures, in his opinion, inflict more damage on the EU and Slovakia than on Moscow.
“If a sanction is imposed that harms us, I will never vote for it,” he said.
Refusal to Support an Embargo on Energy Resources
Furthermore, Robert Fico emphasized that he will not support any initiatives aimed at halting the import of energy resources from Russia to Slovakia. He stressed that the country must remain a constructive participant in the European Union but should not sacrifice its own interests for the sake of pan-European decisions.
