Slovakia Blocks Approval of the 19th EU Sanctions Package Against Russia

The European Union may adopt the 19th sanctions package against the Russian Federation no earlier than October 23, as Slovakia insists on discussing this issue at the summit level. Due to Slovakia’s position, the final approval of the restrictive measures is being postponed, despite a consensus being reached among other member states.

Delay Due to Slovakia’s Position

According to European diplomatic sources, the key obstacle to adopting the sanctions package has been Slovakia’s demand to consider the matter at the highest level. This country is currently the only one insisting on additional consultations, despite Hungary having previously lifted its veto on restrictions for Russian diplomats.

Consensus on Limiting Movement of Russian Diplomats

Western diplomats have finally reached an agreement on limiting the movement of Russian diplomatic representatives within the territory of the European Union. This became possible after Hungary lifted its blockade on the relevant part of the package. However, the final decision on the entire sanctions package is being delayed due to new resistance from Slovakia.

“Western diplomats have finally managed to reach a consensus on limiting the movement of Russian diplomats within the territory of the EU. This happened after Hungary lifted its veto.”

Thus, the adoption of the full sanctions package is expected no earlier than the scheduled EU summit on October 23.
