Estimates of losses from international sources

On May 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced enemy losses since the beginning of 2026: over 145,000 personnel, of which nearly 86,000 were eliminated, at least 59,000 were wounded, and over 800 soldiers were taken prisoner.

“In particular, nearly 86,000 personnel were eliminated, at least 59,000 were seriously wounded, and more than 800 Russian servicemen were taken prisoner.”

Russia does not publish official data on its losses. The last time Moscow provided relevant information was in September 2022, when they reported 5,937 dead.

According to estimates from independent Russian publications “Meduza” and “Mediazona,” as of the end of 2025, the losses of the Russian army amounted to 352,000 personnel. This figure includes 261,000 confirmed dead and 90,000 individuals who were declared dead or missing by court decision or due to delays in death registration.

International organizations and intelligence services believe that the actual losses of Russia are significantly higher. According to one NATO official, as of December 2025, the total number of killed and wounded among Russian troops could reach 1.15 million. British intelligence estimates that the number of Russian soldiers killed since the beginning of the war is nearly 500,000 as of May 2026.

Ukraine has long refrained from disclosing data on its own losses, but now President Volodymyr Zelensky publishes such information approximately once a year. In February 2026, he reported that since the beginning of the invasion, Ukraine has lost 55,000 servicemen. The President also noted that a significant number of Ukrainians are considered missing.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi stated in January 2026 that in 2025, they managed to reduce the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine by 13%, but did not provide details.
