Loss Estimates: Official and Independent Sources
Official Moscow continues to conceal the scale of its own losses. The last data was released back in September 2022, when they reported 5,937 dead.
Meanwhile, journalists from the Russian publication “Mediazona,” the BBC Russian Service, and a team of volunteers have identified the names of 204,626 Russian soldiers who have died in the war since February 2022 based on open sources as of March this year.
At the same time, journalists emphasize that this data is incomplete, as information about the deaths of all servicemen does not become publicly available.
International organizations and intelligence agencies provide even higher estimates of losses. In December 2025, a NATO representative, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that, according to the alliance, the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could amount to up to 1.15 million individuals.
Regarding losses among Ukrainian servicemen, Kyiv has long refrained from disclosing this data. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in early February 2026 that since February 2022, 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in the war. He also emphasized that there are a large number of individuals whom Ukraine considers missing in action.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, noted on January 13, 2026, that in 2025, the number of losses among the Armed Forces of Ukraine was reduced by 13%, although he did not provide more detailed data.
