What is the Value of Old Soviet Coins: Features of Assessment and Collectible Worth

Most coins from the Soviet era that can still be found in the old wallets of Ukrainians hold little value for numismatists. Typically, these coins are merely metal products, and one should not expect significant profit from their sale.

Can Soviet Coins Have Value

According to Vitaliy Tkach, editor of the thematic resource “Coins-Berries”, numismatists are sometimes willing to purchase Soviet coins, but the price usually amounts to a symbolic 1 hryvnia. It is also important that the condition of the coin is good.

“With high probability, it will be a rusty coin. This, along with the possibility that it may also be tarnished, does not add to its value. On the contrary – it decreases it,” the expert noted.

The quality of a coin’s preservation significantly affects its value: the presence of rust or tarnishing only devalues the find.

Exceptions: Rare and Precious Coins

Despite this, certain coins can hold considerable value. These are primarily specimens made of silver or gold, or rare varieties from specific years. However, finding such coins in open circulation is practically impossible.

Experts emphasize that determining the value of a coin on your own can be quite challenging. Sometimes, a seemingly insignificant detail, almost imperceptible to a non-specialist, can make a coin collectible. Therefore, it is recommended to show your finds to professional numismatists for an accurate assessment of their worth.
